Last night I bought some inexpensive fresh fish from the fishmonger for the children to touch, hold, poke, feel, examine and smell of course! The children then painted the fish and made prints. They looked amazing! They LOVED this experience and all were very keen to participate. A fabulous hands-on activity that provided soo much great learning and language.
I covered the light table with a cheap green plastic semi-transparent table cloth to create and underwater backdrop which was extremely effective. I then placed a small tray with tiny shells and some larger shells with the numbers 1 to 10 written on them. Small plastic cups with numbers were included on the tray so the children could put the correct shell in the corresponding cup. (I saw the alphabet written on shells on The Imagination Tree and thought that numbers would also be a great idea.)

I really appreciate your comments. Thanks soo much and have a super Tuesday!!
OK, I think my son would LOVE this idea! I have literally bought a crab leg just so he could investigate it before! Painting with fish would be way too much fun for him. Thanks for sharing an outside-of-the-box idea!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I just pinned it and will be back to explore the blog more!
ReplyDeleteoh my goodness your fish prints are brilliant, and i really like that you bought the fish for the kids to handle. i think its a great way to learn about fish anatomy and not to be too squeamish. I'm sharing this on the Kids Coop FB page and my own (love it that much!)
ReplyDeleteif you want your kids to learn about a fishes anatomy buy a puzzle instead of wasting edible fish -.-
DeleteWhat a good mama!! Your kids have no idea how many mamas would NOT buy them fish to check out and craft with lol Thanks for sharing this with us at Eco-Kids Tuesday! Hope to see you again today! http://likemamalikedaughter.blogspot.com/2013/02/bunnys-bento-box-eco-kids-tuesday.html
ReplyDeleteeco - kids well that's ironic this mother is using good fish to create an art project their are other ways kids can learn with out wasting food. Buy a pack of shells and paint them tell your kids to decorate them and then stamp them on a paper.
DeleteThe fish painting is just wonderful! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is too funny! What a creative and fun idea =) Thanks for linking up to TGIF! Look forward to seeing you again tomorrow,
ReplyDeleteBeth =-)
it's great to teach your kids that the life of non-human living beings is worth so little that they can just kill off some fish to paint with! why don't you try and teach them to care for and respect other creatures instead of having them play with dead animals?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree. Too much for me...painting the corpse of a fish is just not appealing. That really is waste of life.
DeleteI agree, this a really stupid art project
Deleteit is a great thing to do in Fishing in Dubai
ReplyDeletewow this completely stupid you do realize there are people staving in other countries while you waist these fishes and even worse use them in a ridiculous art project. applause please you have just won the selFISH of the year. This is such a waste of a life.
